HMV Staff Take over Twitter
“We’re tweeting live from HR where we’re all being fired! Exciting!!”
This tweet, plus many more, has gone viral as British employees from music retailer HMV took to #twitter to vent their frustrations over a “mass execution” of staff.
Unhappy about the company’s decision to lay off 190 people, disgruntled employees decided to let the world know about their feelings of injustice, sending a string of tweets from HR over 20 minutes, News.com.aureported.
The tweets, which were tagged as “#hmvXFactorFiring,” included: “There are over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution, of loyal employees who love the brand.”
The tweeting continued as staff ‘apologised’ on behalf of HMV for being quiet about the lay offs. “Under contract, we’ve been unable to say a word, or –more importantly – tell the truth,” it read.
Once management got wind of the tweets, this was posted online: “Just overheard our Marketing Director (he’s staying, folks) ask ‘How do I shut down Twitter?’”
The account was deleted shortly after; however screen grabs of the tweets were already circulating online.
“Following this review, a number of redundancies at the head office and distribution centres have been made,” said Nick Edwards, a joint administrator in an official announcement.
“Although such decisions are always difficult, it is a necessary step in restructuring the business to enhance the prospects of securing its future as a going concern,” he added.
Earlier in January, Hilco bought the 92-year-old retail group’s debt, as it faced a collapse which could cost 4,120 jobs and 223 stores worldwide.
